Defence Minister Panos Beglitis categorically stated on Thursday that “Greece will secure it national and sovereign rights to an absolute degree, as they emanate from the international law of the sea and international treaties,” in reference to the issue of the Aegean continental shelf and an Exclusive Economic Zone.
Within the framework of briefing a relevant Parliamentary committee, in light of his upcoming official visit to Israel and contacts with the Israeli government, Beglitis stressed that Athens will calm and decisively monitor whatever developments in the eastern Mediterranean.
Asked to comment on the threats by Turkey against the cooperation between Cyprus and Israel and the surveys for natural gas, Mr. Beglitis stressed that: “We recognize and we are able to defend the sovereignty of the Cyprus Republic under the international law of the sea. The Cyprus Republic is always at the heart of our defense doctrine and we will defend these principles, if and when necessary. Apart from the threats and the ongoing revisionist policy of Turkey, we have the determination and the means to manage this situation. We owe, by undertaking active initiatives, to hold Turkey as accountable in regards to the international law. “
