EU to warn Turkey over threats

The European Commission is expected to address a warning to Turkey in connection with its threats against offshore gas exploration by Cyprus.

The warning is part of a draft report on Turkey’s accession drive which details lack of progress in its negotiations with the European Union.

The Cyprus News Agency said the draft report calls against any kind of threats, sources of conflict or action which could harm good neighbourly relations and the peaceful solution of differences.

The report will also ask for better co-ordination of the foreign policy of Turkey with that of the European Union and will offer a new constructive stage of relations between the two parties.

The report is expected to be made public next Wednesday, along with reports on other countries wishing to join the European Union.

I have written many times in the past and have published press releases that Turkey is following a new road, looking towards the east and the Muslim world. Her interests are to lead the Muslim world and become a strong leader able to confront EU and Middle East. They have taken the opportunity of the general unrest and the financial crisis, with the many wars and threats from extremes and countries like Iran, to open her pages of expansion, which were hidden and just waiting the time, to re-open.
The Western Allies should be very careful with Turkey, I don’t think that Turkey now should be trusted anymore and its membership with NATO should be re-considered.
EU as a unity must take any action to stop the offensive actions of Turkey.

I agree with Peter, I find it almost unbeleivable that the USA think that Turkey is an ally, I mean how naive are these people? If they install a missile defence system to counter perceived threats from Iran (presumably against Israel) how difficult would it be for Turkey to switch off the system (or sabotage it) and or move the euipment and use it for themselves. Even if the euipment is manned by american soldiers I’m sure the turks are clever enough to create a situation to achieve their objective. I think it is quite likely turkey will find a way to steal the technology and develop their own systems too. The main reason for the USA calling Turkey an important ally is because they want missile defence systems in Turkey and access to Turkish airspace. They have short memories, Turkey would not allow the USA to have an airbase in Turkey and condescended to only allow the USA to use turkish airspace during recent conflicts.
The EU is still willing to speak of Turkey’s accession into the EU when Turkey doesn’t even recognize one of the member states, why? This is a slam dunk, there is nothing to talk about until Turkey recognizes the Rep. of Cyprus and it’s rights. Turkey has not signed up to numerous international treaties, has been overtly aggressive towards Cyprus and Greece, illegally occupies 37% of Cyprus and is busy arming itself to the teeth. What part of this behaviour do the USA, NATO, the UN and the EU see as acceptable and becomming of a NATO ally and a potential EU member?

Just to the EU expansion minister Feule warning to Turkey, he said Turkey should try to normalize it’s relationship with Cyprus! Wow, thems fighting words, what a pathetic warning! Not even an agry letter. No matter RoC and Greece will not accept Turkey as an EU member until they give back what they stole (i.e. never).
