Russian navy nears Cyprus drilling zone

THE “Admiral Kuznetsov” class aircraft carrier is currently off the coast of Malta and heading for eastern Mediterranean from their base in the Barents Sea.

Informed sources have said that the Russian navy and Israeli military will hold joint exercises next week close to Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone.

The exercises are slated to begin on the 28th November and last a week.

Commentators say that Russia is determined to send the message that they have invested interests in the region and will secure them.

It is understood that the aircraft carrier is carrying 24-fixed wing planes and a number of helicopters. It has also been reported in the press that the Russian navy may request to use port facilities at Limassol.

The radio report also claimed that three Russian destroyers are currently anchored off the Syrian coast. Russia’s naval supply and maintenance site near Syria’s Mediterranean port of Tartus will be modernized to accommodate heavy warships after 2012, the Russian Navy chief said earlier this week.

“Tartus will be developed as a naval base. The first stage of development and modernization will be completed in 2012,” Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky said, adding it could then serve as a base for guided-missile cruisers and even aircraft carriers.

The Soviet-era facility is operated under a 1971 agreement by Russian personnel.

Russian relations with Cyprus are at their best in many years. Last month, the Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Vyacheslav Shumskiy said that Moscow fully supports the sovereign right of Cyprus to exploit its natural resources.

“Our position is absolutely clear , and we were among the first countries to comment on that, and we totally support the sovereign right of the Cypriot people for exploitation of natural resources , this is totally in accordance with the international law and with the EU regulations, so there is no doubt about that”, he noted.

Invited to comment on Turkish threats against Cyprus, he said that Turkey’s position is not “very wise”.

I don’t think Turkey will say very much. I am more interested to see what happens when Turkey attempts to begin drilling the illegally occupied northern part of Cyprus.

US will give a good lesson to South Cyprus who is enabling Russia to have an important role. So imagine who US will support against the pact of Russia and South Cyprus.
Let the Southern Cyprus explore whatever gas it wants to explore in South Meditarranean. Mediterranean is still full of gas at Turkish coasts and North Cyprus EEZ!

I like hoe you say “South Cyprus”. That actually annoys me and makes me laugh at the same time. Its strange.

There is only one Cyprus. No north or south, my friend. The country is internationally recognized as a whole, Cyprus. North Cyprus is what Turkey and only Turkey considers to be a nation…because of their OCCUPATION. Again..due to the ETHNIC CLEANSING and ANNEXATION of the Northern part of the Country. You must understand that, first.

To be honest with you, I know where you are going to take this conversation next. By saying that Turkey invaded to support the local Turkish population. Falacy! If that were the case than you would not have Cypriots of Turkish descent, who were there prior to to the Turkish invasion, maintain the homes of the original occupants before become refugees to their own land. These homes still maintain the photographs, furniture, everything. When asked why, they simply say that it is not their home and that they are maintaining it in the event that they are ALLOWED to return.

The Turkish Cypriots who say otherwise are the ones who were brought from Turkey to populate and make their own. There were 200,000 of them.

This is the country that you respect? Is this what you consider to be just? Comments like yours make me sick…and really fucking pissed off to be honest.

When I was a young buck visiting my homeland, I was at one point in Nicosia visiting my grandparents (may God rest their souls) and I couldn’t believe what I saw. Let me explain. I’ll keep it limited to two examples but if you wish I could provide more.
One day I hear these rocking boom sounds that were repeating for what seemed to be an hour. I looked to the sky thinking that maybe there were some jets or a much needed storm approaching. Nothing. I asked the people near by what this was and they explained, provocations by the Turkish army, a stones throw away from the UN buffer zone. Lined with tanks and firing them close to the city for effect. This was followed by an large military march along the UN buffer zone, which to me sounded like a really loud local parade. After I was told what these were, I wanted to see for myself. I immediately walked down the road to another neighborhood which bordered the buffer zone and I what I had seen left me wide eyed and angry. In the distance well beyond military presence and occupied part of Nicosia (Cyrpiot capital) were the coastal mountains. that had a massive carving of the Turkish flag etched into the mountain itself. THAT in itself is the worst of the worst provocations of all. After all the atrocities that Turkish army had committed to the country, there’s that. I was the only civilian on the street, apparently you could be shot for being near there. I had no idea. I was only told afterward when I told everyone what I saw and they all freaked. There were some soldiers patrolling the area not too far from me. I noticed they were Cypriot when they walked passed me cause they spoke Greek. I thought the huge machine guns they were carrying were pretty cool.
These military provocations happened twice a day. One at noon and one at nine o clock at night so the locals could not rest.

I will never forget this. Til the day that I die.

Just remember…you reap what you saw. One day, God willing, I will be on the front lines.

      ELEFTHERIA H THANATOS!

I just realized that I wrote 200,000 Turks were brought into Cyprus from Turkey to populate the land. I was in the midst of re writing that sentence.
While there where many thousands of Turks sent in from Turkey, I am unclear as to the exact numbers. However, many of them were considered poor, criminal, or extremist.

The 200,000 figure is related to the number of displaced Greek Cypriots that became refugees to their own land.

Dear Stelio, first of all, I salute you as a friend and not an enemy or sth. I don’t have any grudge against Greeks or Greek Cypriots.
For Turkey and Turkish people as we are the only country in the world who recognize KKTC and don’t recognize Republic of Cyprus, it is totally normal that we call it South and North. So don’t be offended with that. It’s our people who live in North and so-called Republic of Cyprus has no control on it both economically or diplomatically or whatsoever. I truly one day want to see the island united again but I don’t know how it will ever be possible. I have my own ideias that you can read in other posts but it is hard to find people on eachside who would agree on these ideias.
From what I understood, (correct me if I’m mistaken) Turkish military was making exercise on the North side away from buffer zone. So, they weren’t bombing, Greek side, right? I know it might be quite disgusting, I wouldn’t want to wake up with bombing sounds, even if another country is making some military exercises but these things happen. And no, I don’t agree with them, they are total provocations. As for this big flag you are talking about, it was built to make GC remember that North TC exists and you can even see it from Google Earth. I didn’t know of it and one day I was told to go Google Earth to see it…
