Foreign Ministry denies EEZ committee

Foreign Ministry spokesman Grigoris Delavekouras denied reports on Thursday that Greece has set up a special committee to study the possibility of declaring an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Aegean.

Delavekouras said that the issue, which is diplomatically sensitive due to Turkey challenging Greece’s territorial waters and continental shelf rights, is being examined by regular government bodies.

Two completely different topics in my opinion. Greece does not need a committee to declare its EEZ.

This reminds me of the saying: “a camel is a horse designed by a committee”.

So, what are we saying here? That Greece does not have an EEZ until a committee declares it? Or that Turkey thinks the EEZ to be a camel? Because as we all know it’s a horse.

The fact that Delavekouras denies that there is a committee to study the EEZ only emboldens Turkey. Even if the report was false, why couldn’t he just say nothing about it. Instead he rushes to allay Turkey’s fears that Greece will not “study” its potential EEZ declaration, whatever that means, much to Turkey’s pleasure. Forget the 12 mile limit and continental shelf, Greece’s economic security lies in the declaration of its EEZ. Denying it only weakens Greece further.
