I disagree with the premise. My comments on the YouTube video:

Greece’s geographical position is a defense liability true enough, thanks to her neighbors and her EU partners; however, this report does have a message that smells like a paid advertisement.

First of all there is no country with the name Macedonia anywhere in this planet.

Besides that, Stratfor has a well known obsession with geography which in my opinion is perfectly justified since geography defines key economic prospects, geostrategic value and defense issues for any country. These are factors that certainly affect every possible aspect of the political economical and social life of a country.

The point regarding the inability of Greece to accumulate capital through agriculture is correct. However there are other resources available such as mining that can transform the Greek economy (even for a “short” term of few decades) if and when the corrupted Greek governments decide to follow that road.

Stratfor is also correct on seeing Aegean as the center of the country. Most economic activities take place there (mainly tourism) and the main transport of goods take place there too as the key population centers are dispersed around the Aegean coast and shipping is the cheapest way to move merchandise.

The Aegean has also key geostrategic value on controlling shipping routes from the Black sea to the med and from western med to eastern med with Crete. So the challenge of protecting this area from the revisionist neighbor is crucial.

The challenge becomes bigger since Turkey and Greece follow completely opposite roads in terms of demographic, economical and military development. If Greece could so far merely defend its vital space what will do from now on? What are the options available?

An orgy of confusion and misinformation… Why do they call Istanbul, Constantinople and why have both names on the map? Why FYROM is called Macedonia? After all Macedonia is an area of northern Greece, not a country!

The answer is very simple. Stratfor is USA company and USA recognize Macedonia under its constitutional name. Same as Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia, Albania and other 130 or more states around the world.
